Metro home construction up again in 2017

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Home construction continued to improve in the Albuquerque metro area in 2017, with building permits issued for single-family homes reaching the highest level in eight years, according to the latest report from DataTraq.

Permits were issued for 1,732 homes throughout the metro area in 2017, a 6.1 percent increase from 2016, and the most since 1,669 permits in 2009.

While the needle is moving upward, building permits for single-family homes still are running at about half the pace of activity in the previous years.

Thursday night, students at Mountain View Middle School in Rio Rancho hosted a Senior Citizen Prom to celebrate Valentine’s Day. School senate members say they reached out to local retirement homes to invite people to come dance and have dinner.

Developer’s plans for Club Rio Rancho needs zoning changes

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — For more than a year Club Rio Rancho has sat empty. A new developer has a solution, but it would require rezoning the area to allow additional residential housing.

That vote was postponed after residents living near that golf course spoke out at a zoning meeting at Rio Rancho City Hall Tuesday. Many are still concerned that the proposal isn’t fully thought through. Others say some development is better than nothing.

The committee agreed the proposal needs further clarification.

There was a time when homes around the former Club Rio Rancho were in high demand. But now it’s seemingly an overgrown, vacant golf course consumed by debt.
